Also known as Sukhi
Born 18th July 1968
Genres Playback singing
Occupations Singer, composer,actor
Years active 1976–present Sukhwinder Singh is an Indian singer best known for working as Bollywood playback artist. Singh is famous for singing “Chaiyya Chaiyya” for which he won the Best Male Playback Award at the 1999 Filmfare Awards. The song, which was, from Mani Ratnam’s 1998 film Dil Se, was composed by A. R. Rahman, written by Gulzar, and sung in duet with Sapna Awasthi. It was also featured in the musical Bombay Dreams, and, in remixed arrangements, in the titles and credits segments of Spike Lee’s 2006 film, Inside Man. Singh later gained more international fame for singing “Jai Ho” from the film Slumdog Millionaire, which won an Academy Award for Best Original Song and a Grammy Award for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media.
Biography
Singh originally comes from Amritsar, Punjab. He first performed on stage at the age of 8, singing the Lata number “Sa re ga ma pa, pa, pa, ga ma re, ga re mere sang mere saajna”, from the 1970 movie Abhinetri. He also released a Punjabi album called Munda Southhall Da with T. Singh joined Laxmikant-Pyarelal’s troupe and quickly became a music arranger, before heading to the south of India to look for work. At this time he did a film called Rakshagan.
Singh got his break in the movie Karma, in which he sang a few lines; then he did a Madhuri Dixit film called Khilaaf, in which he sang the hit song “Aa ja Sanam”. But the singer himself realised that something was missing in his voice, took a sabbatical and left Mumbai to tour England and America to see, hear and understand the various forms of music. After this broadening of his musical horizons, he returned to Mumbai to kick-start his musical career.
His first effort in Hindi films, Aaja Sanam, went largely unnoticed, even though the music carried the names of Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Then, along came Dil Se. A. R. Rahman used Sukhwinder for “Chaiyya Chaiyya”. The other films that followed – including Taal, Biwi No. 1, 1947 Earth, Daag, Jaanwar, Dillagi, Moksha, Thakshak, Tere Naam, Apna Sapna Money Money, Shadi Se Pehle, Shabd, Musafir, Chak de India, Om Shanti Om and Black and White- have made him a household name.
He has been well received for providing playback singing for Bollywood actor Shahrukh Khan in a total of 6 songs. Of these, “Chaiyya Chaiyya” from Dil Se, “Dard-E-Disco” from Om Shanti Om, “Chak De India” from Chak De! India, “Haule Haule” from Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and “Marjaani” from Billu all went on to become certified hits.

Sukhbir (musician)

Background information
Birth name Sukhbir Singh
Also known as Prince of Bhangra
Born 11/09/1969
Origin Jalandhar, Punjab
Genres Bhangra
Occupations Singer
Years active 1995-present
Labels EMI Sukhbir Singh (born 1969) is a Bhangra singer. He is often referred to as the “Prince of Bhangra”[1][2]. His Bhangra music varied from fusion to pure Punjabi at times.
Early life
He was born in Jalandhar, Punjab but moved to Nairobi, Kenya at the age of one and a half. His father Raghbir Singh was a gyaniji (priest) at the local Gurudwara. There, young Sukhbir honed his singing skills practicing kirtans on the harmonium.[3] This apprenticeship laid the groundwork for the musical side of his Bhangra career.[2] His family spoke Punjabi at home, and his lyrical inspirations have also come from his childhood.[4] He spent 20 years in Nairobi before returning to India.[5]. In Nairobi, he was discovered by businessman Ketan Somaiyya, who suggested Sukhbir make a living with his music. Supported by his father, he began recording in 1996.[4] He then moved to London for a year and a half, before moving to Dubai in 1994.[6]
[edit]Music
His first album (New Stylee) was recorded in Dubai and had many foreign influences. Though he was nominated for many awards, at one point he was asked “Who’s going to listen to this stuff in India?”[1]. The album though, was nominated for the 1996 Channel V Awards in three categories: Best Debut Album, Best Male Vocalist and Best Music Video (for “Punjabi Munde”).[7] He can sing in nine languages, and his album “Oi Triesto” has many Spanish and Portuguese vocals and music.
His second album (gal ban gayi) was a huge success. He was awarded by Sony tv and golden disk award by Indian music society for this. The title song gal ban gayi was a huge hit. He received a plantinum disc for this.
His third album (hai energy) was another huge success. The album contained hit songs like Ishq tera tardpaye which is Sukhbir’s most popular song and sauda khara khara. His video sauda khara khara has bollywood actors Dino Morea and Bipasha Basu.
His other album Dil kare has hit songs like the title song dil kare, nachle soniye and girls girls girls.
Sukhbir’s unique Bhangra is a fusion of Bhangra with rap, techno and reggae. The juxtaposition of these musical styles is enhanced by Sukhbir’s use of original Bhangra instruments like the dhol and dholak. In Oi Triesto, his music was complemented by Spanish and Portuguese rhythms, while he also uses instruments like: tablas, congos, guitars and keyboards in his music.[7][8]
Albums like gal ban gayi, hai energy, prince of bhangra vol 1 and dil kare have made Sukhbir very successful.
In the realm of Indian music, he cites Jagjit Singh as a big influence and said that if he wasn’t doing Bhangra he would be a ghazal singer. He also stated that Daler Mehndi and Malkit Singh were his biggest competition in the Punjabi music market [6] He has also collaborated with Pakistani musicians such as Shehzad Roy. He has also sung a song with a popular Indian singer Shaan. He sung the song Dil laga from Dhoom 2. He has also sung a song with Indian band Josh. When the tsunami occurred he sung a song with Jassi Sidhu, Shin, DCS and Taz, stereo nation. He is back to singing now and his new album is Tere naal nachna.
Sukhbir recently won face of the year in Masala Lifestyle awards

Mobile numbers, addresses on Facebook ‘a security risk’

Sydney, Jan 17 (ANI): A security expert has warned that users should remove their home addresses and phone numbers from their Facebook accounts.
Graham Cluley said the website now gives third parties access to that information.
The website said in a blog post at the weekend that it would give developers of applications access to the contact information of users who install their apps.
“These permissions must be explicitly granted to your application by the user via our standard permissions dialogs. Please note that these permissions only provide access to a user’s address and mobile phone number, not their friend’s addresses or mobile phone numbers,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Facebook’s Jeff Bowen as saying.
However, Sophos security expert Cluley, has raised doubts over the move.
“You have to ask yourself – is Facebook putting the safety of its 500+ million users as a top priority with this move?” he said.
“It won’t take long for scammers to take advantage of this new facility, to use for their own criminal ends.”
Cluley advised that users should take personal info such as home addresses and mobile numbers off their pages.
“You can imagine, for instance, that bad guys could set up a rogue app that collects mobile phone numbers and then uses that information for the purposes of SMS spamming or sells on the data to cold-calling companies,” he said. (ANI)
